A fairly young town, Farragut officially became an incorporated community on January 16, 1980 with Bob Leonard serving as the first mayor for the town. Farragut was originally called Campbell's Station, named after David Campbell, who built a fort and stage coach station there in 1787. Campbell's Station also served as the site of the historic Civil War battle that took place on November 16, 1863.
Farragut residents are far enough away from major cities to enjoy the feeling of small-town living. They are also within short driving distances of the big-city amenities of Knoxville, Nashville and Chattanooga. However, Farragut also provides plenty of entertainment, recreational activities and events for residents to enjoy. In addition, the Smoky Mountains and tourist areas such as Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are also nearby.
Farragut is very sports-oriented. The town is home to golf courses, the Knoxville Track Club, softball leagues, a cheerleading club, a country club and many sports and recreation facilities for public use. For a night on the town, residents can visit the local 10-screen movie theater or the Westside Dinner Theatre. Many annual events keep locals busy and creative. An Antique Car Display, the Weekenders Fashion Show, Concerts by the River, the Farragut Fall 5K Run, an annual golf tournament and the Freaky Friday Night event are just a few of the recreational possibilities. Farragut also provides more than 50 organizations, a number of clubs and many volunteer opportunities.
